Augusto Farfus is heading to the UK this weekend in a very positive mood after his DTM podium in the Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM at only his second race in the series. His determination to do well at Brands Hatch, a circuit he has been successful on in the past, goes without saying.
His performance in the Lausitzring showed he has taken to the DTM format like a duck to water. There is always pressure in motor racing, but a one lap shoot out against the clock and three other drivers is always an added weight on a driver’s shoulders. There is nowhere to hide and the slightest mistake is picked up by the fans thanks to the tv. However, the 28-year-old from Curitiba showed no sign of nerves when he went for pole, and at the end of the lap only missed out to Bruno Spengler, his vastly more experienced BMW team-mate, by 0.038secs, or the blink of an eye.
The pressure in the race came from the Mercedes of Jamie Green on his rear bumper for lap after lap. Again the Brazilian withstood this like an old hand in the DTM. Straight after the race it was back home with his wife and young daughter to Monaco to get ready for this next challenge at Brands Hatch. He kept up his arduous fitness regime and on Monday morning completed an 18 kilometre run in one hour and 31 minutes, showing he is as quick out of the car as he is in it!
“I may know Brands Hatch well from my World Touring Car days, but not the Indy circuit we will be racing on this weekend. This can almost be described as an oval with hills and, at only 1.929 kilometres in length, this will be a real roller coaster ride. A short lap like this is going to be very intense, and with a 98 lap race the fans will certainly get to see lots of action. The challenges for us are certainly coming thick and fast.
“This will be our first race outside Germany with our DTM car, so I am looking forward to how we are received by the UK fans. I know from the past they are passionate about their motorsport, so I am expecting a similar welcome to those we have had in the last two races.
“I know it is a bit of a standing joke about the British weather. I have been keeping a close eye on the forecasts to see what to expect and it seems the chance of rain his quite high. However, I am looking on the positive side and hoping for Brazilian rather than British weather!”
