The time sheets after qualifying in
Zandvoort don’t tell the true story of what was possible at the Dutch track in
the sand dunes by the North Sea. Mixed weather conditions from sun to heavy
rain meant track conditions during the first part of qualifying kept improving
to the flag. Unfortunately for the Brazilian driver the team’s confidence that,
with about a handful of minutes to go to the
end of the 16 minute session, his
second place would see him through to Q2 was misplaced, and he had to watch as
his advantage evaporated and he eventually ended up 20th.
It was not a good day for BMW as the
best any if its drivers could manage was seventh and the top positions were a
clean sweep for Audi. However, Augusto is confident he has a good car and now
has to wait and see what happens in the race: “I am very disappointed as my
pace was good and the car was really well balanced. We could have fought for a
top position and it just didn’t work out for us.”
With very unpredictable weather conditions
for Sunday’s race Augusto and BMW Team RBM know there is still everything to
play for. “We now have to look carefully at the strategy for tomorrow. Today
the weather forecast has proved spot on to the minute, so with this sort of
information at our disposal I hope we can react to whatever weather conditions
we have during the race.”
A back to back race is always a
challenge for the teams and drivers, but Augusto made the best use of the few
days since leaving the Nürburgring by visiting the team’s headquarters in
Mechelen, Belgium. He also joined the other BMW DTM drivers for some fun on the
beach at Ijmuiden on Thursday morning in sand yachts. “It was a nice diversion
and a lot of fun, and obviously we were all very competitive,” said the 28-year-old
driver from Curitiba.
The 44 lap race on the 4.307
kilometre track starts tomorrow at 14.00 with the pit stop window between laps
11 and 33.
