Augusto Farfus could not have been
any happier or any prouder after winning his very first DTM race in Valencia.
Not only is he the first ever Brazilian to win a race in the DTM series, but he
is also sure to end the season as the highest placed rookie.
The driver from Curitiba who totally
controlled the race with a lights to flag victory in his Castrol EDGE BMW M3
DTM said: “I am living a dream. I am like a kid
when he opens his Christmas
presents. I am super, mega happy.”
As the lights went out Augusto made
the perfect start from pole, and by the end of the first lap of the 46 lap race
he was already over a second and a half in front of the nearest Audi. He
stretched this lead bit by bit and by the time he made his first pit stop at
the end of lap 13 had a lead of over five seconds.
The second pit stop came at the end
of lap 26 and again he was able to control the gap to Edoardo Mortara, who was
second in his Audi. However, any pressure from the Italian driver ended on lap
38 when he retired, and then Augusto was able to cruise to victory nearly eight
and a half seconds ahead of the Audi of Adrien Tambay.
While the Brazilian driver made it
all look easy he admitted: “A DTM race is not as easy as it seems. In the race
with the pit stops it is very complex. You have to put the whole weekend
together perfectly, and you need strong support from the team. I got that today
and can’t thank BMW Team RBM and BMW Motorsport enough. It was not a lucky
victory.”
Now Augusto can look forward to the
season finale in three weeks in Hockenheim. This will not just be a big weekend
for him, but also for BMW Motorsport, as he explained: “It is going to be a big
one because the title is still on the table. Gary (Paffett), Bruno (Spengler)
and Jamie (Green) are going to be fighting really hard to bring the title home.
We were strong in the race at the beginning of the year, so I am looking
forward to getting to a known track where I have already raced. That is always
a big help. I want to finish the season on a high and I would love to see BMW
win the title.”
The race in Hockenheim will be on
the 21st October and this is the tenth and final race of the season. The
drivers’ championship battle could not be closer as Gary Paffett’s lead over
Bruno Spengler was reduced to just three points in Valencia after the Meredes
driver retired and the BMW driver finished sixth.
