Again the German fans rushed to a
track in their tens of thousands to watch the latest DTM race, but this time
they saw a gruelling race for many of the drivers. With temperatures in the
thirties and overtaking difficult the drivers had their work cut out at the
Nürburgring. Unfortunately Augusto Farfus was not able to capitalise on his
sixth place grid position and ended up tenth
overall.
The troubles for the 28-year-old
from Curitiba began as soon as the red starting lights went out. He was not
able to get away as he would have liked in his Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM and
found himself demoted to ninth at the end of lap one. “It was really tricky and
I lost a lot of places,” he explained.
BMW Team RBM tried everything it
could to help him with strategy, but there was nothing it could do in the circumstances.
“After the start the race was pretty much dictated by the traffic. However, you
just have to look at the positives, and it is important at this stage in our
first year that we carry on, finish all the races and learn as much as we can
about the strengths and weaknesses of our package,” Augusto added.
Not every part of the race was
disappointing as Augusto’s pit stops were excellent. He came in the first time
at the end of lap 16. He immediately reported the car felt better after this
stop. He then came in again at the end of lap 27 but, along with many of the
drivers out there, found any chance of moving up the field impossible.
However, it was a superb day for BMW
Motorsport as Bruno Spengler won the race and Martin Tomczyk came third. This was
BMW’s 51st DTM win and a fitting end to a weekend of celebrations for the 40th
anniversary of BMW M.
The next event on the agenda is next
weekend and this is round seven of the series in the Dutch seaside resort of
Zandvoort.
